Welcome to our Coffee of the World Tour - a journey that celebrates the people, places, and cultures that make coffee one of life’s greatest pleasures. Each stop explores a region where coffee is more than just a crop - it’s a way of life. We begin where it all started: Ethiopia, the undisputed birthplace of coffee.
Where Coffee’s Story Begins
Legend tells of a young goat herder named Kaldi who noticed his goats dancing joyfully after eating bright red berries from a wild shrub. Curious, Kaldi tried them himself - and soon felt their invigorating effect. Word spread, and before long, monks were using these energizing beans to stay awake during long prayers. From this highland legend, coffee was born.
While the tale is centuries old, the magic remains. Ethiopia is the only place on Earth where Coffea arabica grows naturally, making it the genetic birthplace of all Arabica coffee. Here, coffee is not just a drink - it’s woven into daily life, celebrated in traditional coffee ceremonies that symbolize friendship, hospitality, and respect.
The Diverse Regions of Ethiopian Coffee
Ethiopia’s varied landscapes produce coffees as distinctive as its cultures. Each region offers its own signature flavor profile, shaped by altitude, climate, and processing method.
Yirgacheffe – Perhaps the most celebrated of all Ethiopian coffees, grown high in the Sidamo region between 5,800 and 6,600 feet above sea level. Yirgacheffe is known for its floral aroma, citrus brightness, and tea-like body. It’s clean, refined, and unforgettable - a coffee connoisseur’s dream.
Sidamo – Smooth and balanced, Sidamo coffees are loved for their soft, fragrant notes and subtle herbal undertones. They’re complex yet approachable, making them ideal for those who prefer a mellow, richly flavored cup.
Harrar – Grown in the arid eastern highlands, Harrar beans are dry-processed and bold. They burst with wild fruit and wine-like flavors, layered with sweet spice and chocolate undertones. Harrar’s intensity and character are as legendary as the region itself.
The Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony: More Than a Brew - It’s a Ritual
In Ethiopia, coffee is far more than a morning pick-me-up. It’s honored through the Ethiopian coffee ceremony, a slow, deliberate ritual symbolizing community, hospitality, and respect.
Fresh green coffee beans are roasted over open flame, hand-ground with care, and brewed in a traditional clay pot called a jebena. The rich aroma fills the room long before the first cup is poured — usually three rounds, each with its own meaning and growing intimacy. Guests are invited to linger, connect, and share stories over each steaming cup.
In Ethiopia, coffee isn’t just consumed — it’s celebrated.
Ethiopian coffee is more than a taste - it’s an experience. Each sip connects you to centuries of history, to farmers hand-picking cherries on steep mountain slopes, to the aroma of roasting beans drifting through village air.
